Malpa
The three Kagyu patriarchs were the great translator Marpa, the ascetic Milarepa, and the great doctor Gampopa. Marpa was the founder of the Tibetan Kagyu lineage. He went to India three times to follow Naropa and many other masters to receive various teachings; he brought the Vajrayana and Mahamudra traditions to Tibet; he translated a large number of Buddhist scriptures into Tibetan, continued to practice and teach the Dharma to many Tibetan disciples—he was the first master of the Kagyu lineage in Tibet.
Unlike the great guru that most people imagine to be peaceful, kind, and disciplined, Marpa was strong-willed and stubborn, and lived an ordinary lay life. The process of seeking the Dharma that he went through, even though it was very difficult, transformed his shortcomings such as arrogance into good qualities such as courage. Marpa was extremely intelligent and very diligent. He had a strong belief and faith in the Dharma, and was devout enough to develop merit and benefit countless sentient beings. He was an extraordinary and compassionate supreme achiever!
