The Buddha Shakyamuni preached this Mahakala Sutra in the Buddhist scriptures, the full name of which is The Sutra of the Great Merit and Perfection Dharani of Mahakala Mahakala ("Mahakala" is a translation from Middle Chinese; the Tibetan pronunciation is "Mahakala"). It explains that this great bodhisattva had already attained Buddhahood in the past; now he has manifested himself as the bodhisattva Mahakala to bestow blessings on the poor and suffering sentient beings.
The Black Robe Mahakala of Karma Kagyu has three eyes, one face and two arms. He is called "Black Robe Protector" and "Black Robe Vajra" because he wears black robes. He and Mahakala, the Goddess of Good Fortune, are called "Black Robe Brother and Sister Dharma Protectors". As early as the founder of Kagyu, Tilopa, Black Robe Vajra was an important Dharma Protector practiced by the Venerable. The second Karmapa, Karmapa Bashi, once said: "The Black Robe Protector and the Black Hat Karmapa are one and the same." Because the Black Robe Mahakala is a great protector of Buddhism and the Black Hat Karmapa is a practitioner of Buddhist affairs; there is a close connection between the two in terms of history and meaning. He is the most important guardian of the Karmapa lineage, unique to all the great Dharma kings of all generations.
