Twenty-one Taras
The twenty-one Taras are the twenty-one incarnations of Tara.
According to the "Tara Secret Path", in the past, in the colorful world where the Drum Sound Buddha lived, there was a princess named Hui Yue. She developed bodhicitta and made a vow to benefit sentient beings with her female body until the end of samsara. She was later renamed Tara. The Drum Sound Buddha also gave her a prophecy: "Until you attain the supreme enlightenment, your name is just Tara."
The Tara Origin Record also says: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva saved countless sentient beings before the calamity. But one day, he observed the six realms and found that the suffering sentient beings had not decreased. He was suddenly filled with sorrow and shed tears. The tears fell and turned into lotus flowers. From the lotus flowers, Green Tara appeared and said to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva: "Don't be sad. I will help you and carry out the work of saving countless sentient beings." She also said a stanza: "Don't be sad. I vow to help you. Although sentient beings are countless, my wishes are also countless."
At this time, following the mantra of Vairocana Buddha, twenty-one Taras with different bodies emerged from the lotus and made vows to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, willing to assist Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva in carrying out the great cause of saving sentient beings. From then on, the twenty-one Taras assisted Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, widely saved countless sentient beings, and established immeasurable merits, and their names were known throughout the ten directions of the world.
The twenty-one Taras are Swift and Victorious Tara, White as the Autumn Moon Tara, Golden Tara, Victorious Tara with the Tathagata’s Crown, Tara with the Voice of Hum, Tara Victorious between the three periods of time, Tara that destroys all others, Tara who destroys all Maras and is free, Tara that bestows victory, Tara that removes all worries, Tara who embraces all sentient beings and removes all disasters, Tara that bestows all auspiciousness, Tara that matures, Tara that summons with anger, Tara that is great and peaceful, Tara that destroys greed, Tara that brings universal happiness, Victorious Tara, Tara that burns away all suffering, Tara that brings universal accomplishment, and Tara of perfection.
Although all the twenty-one Taras are transformed from Green Tara, they have different body colors, appearances, symbols, and duties. The twenty-one Taras have different body colors such as green, red, black, white, yellow, and blue. The most basic posture is holding an upala blue lotus in the left hand and making the giving mudra with the right hand. Above the crown of hair, there are five Buddhas, including Vairocana, Ratnasambhava, Amoghasiddhi, and Amitabha.
The "Praise to Twenty-one Taras" is well-known in Tibet and is widely recited. The content is that Vairocana Buddha was moved by Tara's great vow to save sentient beings and praised her with the root mantra of Tara. There are a total of twenty-one verses praising the merits of the twenty-one Taras.
The Twenty-Tar Asuras can subdue all demons, remove the fear and all sins of sentient beings, avoid enemy invasion, break the obstacles of sin, eliminate the harm of all poisons, clear nightmares and disputes, and eliminate all worldly and otherworldly difficulties, so that sentient beings can increase their blessings and prolong their life, open their wisdom, and have peace and good fortune. All that is asked for will be fulfilled.
Whenever they move, get sick, or go out, many families will invite monks or villagers to come to their homes to chant the 21-tarasana and mantras from morning to night to pray for the family and ward off disasters. In temples, chanting the 21-tarasana is a compulsory lesson for monks and is performed all year round without interruption.
